THE MUSIC OF HAPPINESS

It’s impossible to imagine Brazil without music. May as well paint Paris without the Eiffel Tower, or Italy deprived of pasta. Mission impossible!

Brazilian music isn’t just part of the country’s culture, but also its history. It slowly emerged from the perfect mix of indigenous, African and European influences.

The great Rio musician Chico Buarque said of his country’s melodies that they had “a sad joy and a joyful sadness”. What he didn’t say is that Brazilian music is so powerful it transcends borders, attracting international stars like Frank Sinatra, edgy contemporary singers like Lilly Allen, and kings of dance like Avicci.

“I live in a tropical country / that was blessed by God / and is beautiful by nature / my country is a beauty”. Those are the lyrics to 'País Tropical', a song written by Brazilian composer Jorge Ben in 1969. The ode to Brazil praises the country’s beauty, the joy of its people, and the power of music and dance to wipe out sadness. “And I live smiling, always smiling / since I owe nobody a thing / because I’m happy / and I always live like this / with whatever I have within reach”.
